Connecting pc to stereo

This is probably a very elementary, stupid question, but can anyone tell me how to connect my computer to my stereo so that I can play the mp3s in Windows Media Player through my stereo. I have tried connecting the sound card directly to an audio input on the stereo and all I can get is a lot of buzzing through the stereo's speakers.

Does the stereo have RCA type inputs or something else? What you described is how it should be done. Typically you use something like this:

Exactly, you should use the cables above, i use them on my stereo.
First of all, check cables throughly, they might be damaged.
Does your stereo has an input level volume? maybe it is too low, or check your volume leves on you computer (general and wave), maybe they´re too low, and you hear a lot of noise, buzz.
