D drive reads CD when disk is in and DVD-RW when empty?

    when my dvd door is closed it states that it is a - DVD-RW Drive (D:) in "my computer" window. I then insert a dvd-r blank disc, the door closes and this changes to CD Drive (D:) in the "my computer" window.

    Does this mean it is reading the disk as a CD rather than a DVD-R. I then use Nero 6 to burn home movies and fails at the end. I have a NEC 1300a DVD Burner running in XP.

    I have seen that before it really doesnt mean anyting. your failures sound more media related what brand media are you using? if it is memorex then that is probably your problem right there.
