D drive reads CD when disk is in and DVD-RW when empty?

  1. when my dvd door is closed it states that it is a - DVD-RW Drive (D:) in "my computer" window. I then insert a dvd-r blank disc, the door closes and this changes to CD Drive (D:) in the "my computer" window.

Does this mean it is reading the disk as a CD rather than a DVD-R. I then use Nero 6 to burn home movies and fails at the end. I have a NEC 1300a DVD Burner running in XP.
