Likely a failed hard drive. Still under warranty? Call Dell to replace.
Some owners have trouble if they converted from WXP Pro to VISTA Home Premium witht the free update disc. In which case, you have to reinstall WXP first.

Did you buy this Dell Inspiron 6400 / 1505 from Dell or from QVC where most of them are marketed. Do you have the VISTA install or the WXP install?
It sounds as if your drive is bad. Call Dell for a replacement if still under warranty.
You might also try installing the maroon colored Dell disc into the optical drive to see if it can repair your installation on your hard drive.
It could also be an investation caused by a virus, rootkit, or spyware. Did you have a firewall and good security software installed?
Otherswise you need to buy or borrow another hard drive to see if you can get it to accept the install discs that came with the machine.
It is a very fine laptop. We have many many clients who have them. It is new enough that yours should or could still be under warranty. So your first step should be to call Dell Technical support on the phone, and have your service tag and express service code handy. They are on your invoice, and on the bottom of the machine.

There is no reason it should show the BIOS. It all depends on the level of failure.
I know the laptop well. We have 200 of them out there that we service for an insurance company, and for two real estate firms. We know the computer extremely well.
There is no way I can help you in Bombay, except to tell you to call your Dell Tech support if it is still in warranty, and not stolen. It is a hard drive issue, well known, and Dell will replace it under warranty. otherwise, buy your own.

And do not call me dear sir.

Sounds like the issue is most likely the motherboard or CPU. If you have already swapped out the memory and hard drive and are still getting a no post situation it is most likely either the motherboard or CPU.

Please do make sure you are trying with and without the AC adaptor plugged in just to ensure its not a power issue. If that does not work you will have to contact Dell support in your area, and as you are out of warranty you will have to either purchase the parts or have them setup a service at your cost to have the part/parts replaced.

Dell CA, are you a technician, or a public relations person? You seem to appear only when somebody poormouths Dell.

It would be good to know why you think it might be a motherboard problem, so we can learn from you.

The user reports he bought the computer in India, and that it is out of warranty. He also called Dell and was frustrated by
There is no reason I can see to believe it would be a power adapter issue. Since he can see the WiFi light, the CD ROM blinks, Power light goes on for 45 seconds. He called Dell in Bombay and did not get a good response (whatever that means).

Please tell us more about how Dell customer assurance online works, so we can learn to help others as you have helped Mujib.

Thank you Raybay for your questions.

I am technician who is also a public relations specialist. The reason that we appear to show up when people have problems or badmouth Dell, is because that is when a technician can be of assistance.

I did not state that I believe it may be a power adaptor issue, I asked him to try with battery and AC only because the problem that Mujib described can be caused by a fault either where the battery or AC adaptor connects to the motherboard and immediately tell us what part would need to be replaced as opposed to guessing between motherboard and CPU.

If you would like to know more about Dells involvement online, and the different ways we try to assist people with technical as well as customer care issues, please visit our blog at Direct2Dell.com.

Fortunately Mujib now has a working system. Hopefully if he encounters more hardware problems in the future support will less frustrating.
