The funding exceeded their monetary goal by $1 million and marks the largest capital injection into DigitalGenius to date, TechCrunch reports.

The company aims to use the $3 million "to fuel its operations and growth plans, and most importantly, to productize its AI offerings and transform the way brands communicate with consumers at scale," according to a press release. In other words, DigitalGenius plans to hire more staff and improve the artificial intelligence systems they'll sell to clients.

Back in May, DigitalGenius founder Dmitry Aksenov told TechCrunch they had 20 employees between their New York and London offices. They're now looking to expand their workforce by 10 within a year. Aksenov started DigitalGenius in London, where it first provided automated customer service over the phone.

Now, DigitalGenius uses AI and NLP to respond to your customer service and sales needs via text messages or online chat. BMW and Unilever are two major companies that have already partnered with DigitalGenius. In the case of BMW, DigitalGenius could direct you to a nearby car dealer.

David Hirsch, DigitalGenius investor and co-founder of Metamorphic Ventures, said in the same press release he believes cable companies will one day provide a "pleasurable" customer service experience thanks to AI.

But as AI systems become more common in companies, the technology also presents a threat to workers. It remains to be seen when, not how, AI will be more viable than maintaining a large customer service staff.

It's a genuinly interesting technology.
