Dimension 4600 ram upgrade problem

  1. Bought 1 gig of ram from Mushkin and it's PC3200 400mhz. It is supposed to be compatible with my 4600. Installed ram and when I turned on my computer it gave me a PNP1 error. I tried to just use the new ram but no avail. I put the orginal ram back in by itself and the computer is running normal. What do I need to do to get the new ram up and running.

If your current ram works, the new ram probably is faulty, or isnt compatible (eventhough it may say that it is). Unless Dell specifically says that the ram is compatible, I wouldnt trust a 3rd party vendor's advice. I also have a dell and Kingston has worked really well for me in the past. Also, is this your only ram module in the system? If not, make sure your new ram matches the speed of your other ram module otherwise you may get unpredictible behavior.

dell would rather make a little extra profit than allow for good memory compatibility on thier systems. nothing new there, or for any oem.
