Modems (you didn't specify what kind of) usually don't have fixed IP addresses when connecting, so you'd need to know your friends' addresses first. Other than that, I don't really see why it wouldn't work - unless the game itself doesn't support that. I haven't played Starcraft so I don't know if it has specific servers.

There are two situations using modems with games like that.

    1) You want to dial your friends computer with your modem and play together. That only supports 2-Player.

    2) As for IP, yes, just one person needs to be the server, and everyone else connect to his ip address. This is assuming everyone is just connected to the internet. Although, with just a modem, it might be rather slow. That's why I never really play online games. =D And broadband isn't an option for me. :dead:

Also, you will all want to make sure you have the latest (at least the same) version of the game running. That would be:

    Windows
    Starcraft without Broodwar Installed
    http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/starcraft/patches/pc/SC-110.exe

    Starcraft with Broodwar Installed
    http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/broodwar/patches/PC/BW-110.exe

And if you're using Macintosh, please refer to

You would probably know more about it than I would.
