Disk Defrag problem

Using XP on a HP Compaq laptop
Get a blue screen at start up with the message Autochk not found. After this message system runs fine.
However when running defrag. the message come up: "disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsck is scheduled to run on the volume: (c). Please run Chkdsk /f."
This will not run so I can't defrag.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the info - I have the disc so will give it a go & let you know how I get on
