Back in February this year, Disney partnered with Apple to launch a service called Disney Movies Anywhere that allowed people to watch their Disney movie library on any Apple device. Now, the media giant has announced a similar partnership with Google.
The deal means that you can now buy a Disney, Pixar, or Marvel movie from the Google Play store on your Android device, and can later watch it on an Apple device through the iTunes library, as well as on Disney’s own Disney Movies Anywhere app and website. The same is true vice versa.
“We want to make it easy for movie fans to enjoy all of their past and future digital purchases across all of their devices”, said Google’s head of Google Play Movies partnerships Jonathan Zepp. The DMA App is now available on the Google Play store.
Disney's partnership with both Google and Apple gives the company access to nearly all the phones sold in the US -- market research firm Strategy Analytics recently reported that over 84 percent of smartphones shipped globally last quarter were powered by Android, while Apple's iOS's market share stood at around 13 percent.
The partnership also highlights the importance of online streaming to traditional media companies. Last month, HBO announced that it is planning to launch a streaming video service in 2015. The very next day, CBS also announced its plans to offer a standalone streaming service called CBS All Access.
The initiative is also being seen as yet another step in Disney's fight against piracy. "If you make a legal, reasonably priced offering, people often choose that", said Jamie Voris, Disney's chief technology officer. The company also recently registered a patent for a piracy-free search engine that will include results from its official channels.
