DJI at its Mavic Pro unveiling last September teased a pair of FPV (first-person view) goggles that allowed the wearer to see a video stream from a connected drone in real-time. On Monday, the Chinese drone maker officially announced the product as the DJI Goggles.
The goggles, which more resemble a VR headset than FPV eyewear, feature two 1,920 x 1,080 displays (one per eye) that offer two different viewing modes: 720p / 60FPS or 1080p / 30FPS with 110ms latency. DJI says the high resolution helps eliminate the latticing effect commonly found on lower resolution headsets.
The headset also features touch controls, a physical power button, a function button, headphone jack, an SD card slot and more. It’s compatible with the Mavic Pro, Phantom 4 series and Inspire series of drones from DJI.
Perhaps the coolest feature of the goggles is head tracking. In this mode, your head movements can control both the aircraft yaw and the camera tilt (the gimbal can also be controlled separately without affecting yaw, DJI says). This sounds like a really neat feature that’ll no doubt boost immersion although I wonder if motion sickness would ever become a factor.
DJI is now accepting pre-orders for the headset priced at $449. Look for them to ship beginning May 20.
