DNS not responding

Hi. :)

I'm having an issue connecting to the internet.

My computer is a Compal NBLB2 running Windows 7 and I am trying to connect to VIVA mobile broadband using a HUAWEI E1820 USB modem. The device is working properly and the drivers are up to date.

When I run the Windows 7 troubleshooter, it gives me this error:

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have already tried:
- uninstalled/reinstalled modem application and drivers
- disabled Firewall and Symantec Network Threat Protection
- set preferred DNS to 208.67.222.222, alternate to 208.67.220.220... vice versa
- uninstalled Bonjour
- disabled Microsoft WiFi Miniport Adapter
- selected "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS address automatically"

The modem I am using works great on three other friends' computers also running Windows 7. I am the only one having a problem.

Here is my ipconfig:

The only addresses I can ping are my loopback and IP.
I cannot ping my Default Gateway, DNS servers, or websites ("Request timed out").

When I use nslookup (ping 127.0.0.1 84.235.107.122), the DNS request times out.

Have no idea what to do at this point. :(

Any suggestions?

the 42..... is a public IP, which is rare.

please describe your ISP, the connection, {dsl, cable, satteilite} and make/model of the modem (and router if any).

did you configure this manually?

The ISP is VIVA. The connection is mobile broadband (satellite). The USB modem plugs directly into my computer and the model is HUAWEI E1820.

I left my settings to obtain the IP and DNS automatically, so in this state nothing has been manually configured.

that's the right approach.

is this the device?

You must have access elsewhere to post here, so download the driver to a thumbdrive, move it to the effected system, and update thed driver.

Q? Which OS are you using; apparently the device is know to be unsupported on Win/7.

Yep, that's the device

I do have access to another wireless network, which is the one I'm currently using. :)

I am using Windows 7, but the three friends whose computers work fine with the modem also have Windows 7.

I should add that this HUAWEI modem is not mine; I'm borrowing it from a friend for the purpose of troubleshooting. The one recently given to me by VIVA is the BandLuxe C321 USB modem, same connection type.

The BandLuxe modem is supposed to be compatible with Windows 7, but it doesn't work on my computer nor any of my friends'.

The drivers for both of these modems (and all related software) are loaded when they are plugged into the USB port, but I will check for updated versions of both of them. I am downloading the HUAWEI driver from the website now but it's going to take quite a while.

I'll get back to you with the results.

this may NEVER work!
Each device has a serial number (known as the MAC address) and is associated with a specific customer. If the pair doesn't match (Mac+Customer), then access is usually denied - - your exact symptom :(

What's interesting is that I gave one of the HUAWEI modems to a friend who has never used it before and it worked on her computer.

I'm the only one having the problem. :S

Also, I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers again and I'm still having the same issue.

Ipconfig after updating drivers:

When I run Windows 7 diagnostics, it says:
Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (primary DNS server) is not responding

Same issue. Can't ping anything but myself. Manual configuration for the IP and DNS seems to be there by default when I uninstall/reinstall the drivers and modem application, but the addresses are always blank. So I go in and select "Obtain automatically."

I'm going back to the VIVA store soon, hopefully tomorrow or the day after. I'm not sure what to do since 3 of their modems don't work on my computer but they work on my friends' computers.

Anything else on my PC that I should take a look at? Or places on my friends' PCs that I should make sure our settings are the same?

As for the BandLuxe modem that was given to me by VIVA, I generally can't even connect to it so I can't run ipconfig.

I also can't find the drivers online, although Windows says they are up to date.

Again, it's a BandRich BandLuxe C321 USB modem. It's supposedly compatible with Windows 7, but I'm having more issues with it than the HUAWEI modems.

As for the hardware stuff I'll tell them about it and maybe a new modem would work... But if it's a computer settings issue or anything on my end, I just wanted to get that out of the way first. I'm overseas and the language barrier is motivation enough to try to get as much of this sorted out as possible before I show up there!

What version of 7 are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit. Did you update Windows 7 lately. Are you using Windows 7 drivers or device brand drivers. I would do this.

Remove all drivers even delete them. Attached Ethernet LAN cable to your system and then stick in the USB device. Let Windows 7 search over the internet for the right driver for your device.

Does the device have any firmware (ROM) update for it via USB to device?

I didn't see any rule about port 53 in my Firewall configuration but I disabled my network protection and Firewall just to see if that was affecting my connection. Had no effect.

Tipstir, I am using 64-bit. I have not updated Windows 7 recently. I uninstalled the drivers for both USB modems and let Windows search for the latest ones. Still having the same issue.

No firmware updates were included.

click Advanced
The IP Settings tab should have "DHCP Enabled"

I noticed that as well and had previously tried to change it. However, the TCP/IPv4 (which both use) properties look different for the BandLuxe naked modem.

It seems there is no way for me to enable it. On the other one all I have to do is select "Obtain automatically" and it automatically becomes DHCP enabled.

Not so for the BandLuxe.

I will update the issue once I can go to the VIVA store, as I think I've exhausted my resources for now. :)

From the above saga, I would swear that your ISP is not recognising you as a customer.

My approach would be to be sure your firewall is active, connect the computer without a router and then call the ISP;

"HELP!! I can't connect to your DNS"

Alright, so I went to VIVA today and it was able to work fine using the BandLuxe modem.

The agent told me to use 3G and it worked great.

However, when I came home, I get no signal on 3G... Only 2G.

But for some reason on 2G I can't establish a connection. It just gets stuck at "Connecting..." and stays that way.

So it's not a computer issue, it's a modem issue. And it just looks like I'm SOL.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help!

my my my - - good news / bad news. At least you know which way is up and your system is just fine.

3g vs 2g? Isn't that related to cell phones?
