do websites that test connection speed really work?

  1. Can someone advise if the connection speeds given on websites dedicated to this task are accurate?

    can you reccomend a site to do this for me. I want to make sure I am getting what I am paying for.

    Speed tests hosted on a web site are usually fairly limited as to what they can do.

    For a full workout you need to download a program.I use Dan Elwell`s speed test

    That gives you ping times + downloads from all around the globe.

    ping timings are trivial and statistically 'insignificant' compared to down/up load testing.
    Why? Because any specific packet can be delayed (and in ping there are very few)
    which biases the results shown. A good size file download or upload will produce
    a better picture of what may be expected in the future.
