Does increasing AGP bus speed offer any performance gains?

Can anybody offer a clear advice on whether increasing the AGP bus has any noticeable performance gains? Intuition suggests that increasing the bus speed would thus increase the data throughput. Does that logic stand?
The only information I can find are horror stories of graphics cards being ruined etc. Any suggestions would be most appreciative!
