Solved Don't know if I have a virus or hardware problem

I have a question, just want to make sure I doing everthing correctly.

I had AVG on my PC. I unistalled it for some of the scans. You told me to reload AVG, but when looking for a link to AVG I found that this forum recommended MS Essentials and others (no mention of AVG). I loaded MSE.

Further in the process you mention loading AVG, so I did that too.

Should I completely remove AVG or can I have both AVG and MSE on my PC?

I appreciate your help with all of this.

CJ

I'm sorry for the confusion.
If you prefer MSE you must remove AVG using AVG Remover.
You can run only one AV program.

Broni, question regarding AV. I was using AVG with occasional scans using Malwarebytes. I realize that no one AV is perfect. So which AV would you have running 24/7 and which would you have available to do occasional scans to cover the weak spots of the primary AV?

I've loaded MSE to give it a try but, in the last few minutes I've read a number of AV comparison reports and MSE does not rank very high. Reviews seem to like Avast and Avira, although there are a lot of diverse recommendations with no real consensus.

I also use Spybot with AVG -- both on full time. I had a program called WOT (?) that would warn me about unsafe web sites. I do not even know if that is still operating on my PC.

You can't have two AV programs installed so you have to remove one.
I don't really have any preferences. As you said there is no perfect AV program and it's always about safe computing by you.

I consider Spybot as a tool of the past so I don't recommend it at all.

Your computer is clean

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download
51a5ce45263de-delfix.png
DelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:
  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings
Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): https://www.techspot.com/downloads/4898-secunia-personal-software-inspector-psi.html. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

12. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

Last night I had trouble with a windows update. The update is Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419). First try it failed. Second try it ran, then seemed to stall. I terminated the process, and got a message that it was successfully installed. The "View Update History" shows a sucessful install also.

Just now I was continuing the updates. I am I decided MSE definitions should be updated. I looked at MSE History and see that a Trojan has been quarantined this morning at 4:35am. The item deleted by MSE was "Trojan:Win32/Trafog!rts".

Should I rerun or step back in the process to ensure everything is clean?

Thx

If you don't see any ill effects on your computer you should be fine.
Any current issues?

A little bit of trouble with the browser check. Initial scan showed an old Adobe Flash installed and two errors with Adobe Reader. I fixed the Flash issue and tried to install the current Reader using the links.

Upon rerunning the browsercheck, I get two warnings for adobe Reader.

One says "Installed Version 10.1 Latest Version 11.0.7"
The other "Installed Version 10.1 Latest Version 10.1.10"

Will try the Reader install again.

I went into IE add-ons and enabled all of the Adobe Reader entries and an Acrobat v7.01 entry. Tried to pull up a PDF from a site and go a blank gray windows -- no document.

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
You'll get more attention.

Good luck :)

I was able to fix the Adobe Reader within IE problem. So everything looks good.

After all the scans I'm curious, was there a specific malware or virus? Oe was it simply some corrupted video drivers?

BTW, Thank you very much for your help. I've used the forum in the past (and donated). I think you are doing great work and I find it increadibly helpful.
