Both. It happened while I was using Windows 7, before upgrading. Then after upgrading, I lost I for a while, but recently it has happened more and more...

DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER, Ntoskrnl.exe... What type of drive is the boot drive, SSD or regular hard drive?

Stack Overflow has a few vectors (routes which make this occur).
  1. make sure you're running current win/8 drivers
  2. use SFC /SCANNOW to prove permissions
  3. run a good anitvirus (like malwarebytes) as this condition is step-one to injecting a virus.
