DVD Burner doesn't recoginize blank discs

I recently purchased a external "Backpack" DVD/rewrite. I bought it off of e-bay. It installed ok with alittle help from the internet downloads. It will play DVD's, CD and even CD/R + RW but when I put a blank DVD/r in to burn it says the drive is empty. I bought memorex DVD/R 8X. I am new to DVD burners and don't know if I bought the wrong blanks or not. I tried putting them in my regular DVD/ CD burner which only burns cd's and it doesn't recognize a disk in their either. The literature says it burns at 4X but the disks say 8X does this have anything to do with it. I bought it from ebay so I don't know if it is a bad burner or if I need to do something.

Probably. I had the same problem with mismatched CD-RWs once. I'd try getting compatible blank DVDs and see.
