DVD Burner Dud??

First time member here. Bought a Toshiba DVD burner from Ebay and it was delivered yesterday. It was supposed to be brand new with Nero software etc etc....arrived scratched, with no software and 1 A5 page of writing with a paragraph in English....anyway, XP loaded the driver for the external box but when a dvd is loaded into the drawer it does not seem to recognise that it has a disc in it.....can anyone advise? I borrowed Nero from a neighbour which loaded on OK but the DVD does not seem to know it has a disc and asks for me to insert one....help please. Just checked the device manager and it says it is there so what could be wrong???

Just need a little of clarification. Does the drive not recognize DVDs or CDs or both? If it doesn't recognize a movie DVD, make sure you have set the Region code for the DVD drive. You can do this by going to:

My Computer
Right click on your DVD drive
Select Properties
Select the Hardware tab
Select your DVD on the list
Click on Properties
Select the DVD Region tab
Select your country
