DVD files not recognised

I just installed an NEC ND-1200 DVD burner on my machine and cannot play nor read DVDs.
It is quite content with data or music CDs and/or CDRs
OS = XP-Pro
I've uninstalled and re-installed all of my DVD software
when I try to select the device in DVD Pro, it does not recognise that a DVD is in the tray
VERY FRUSTRATING!!

Is your problem with burned DVDs or 'real' DVDs?

it fails to recognise consumer grade (purchased) DVD movies - eg: Lord of the Rings or X-Men

I have not set the region code (in DVD Pro)

shouldn't it be possible to see the DVD contents from Explorer?
(right click on the DVD device in MyComp and select Explore)
this action yields the hourglass briefly while the CD spins up, then reports that the tray is empty

Is that the only DVD\CD ROM device in your system, or better yet, the only IDE device on that IDE cable?

Region should be set in your DVD drive Properties. There should be a tab for Region settings, there you can choose the correct setting from a list.

I am unable to set the DVD region - I keep geting the following error:

Unable to update region setting. Please be sure that the drive contains region 1 media and you have administrative privelege.

(both of which are true)

BTW - reply to lowman:
The DVD is the slave on the secondary IDE.
The master on the secondary IDE is a NEC 7800 CD/RW

Try that DVD-writer as master on IDE2 on its own, connecting it at the end of the IDE-cable.
