Early reviews suggest Warcraft is no better than most video game movies

Like a lot of people, I had high hopes for the Warcraft movie. Promising trailers, an impressive cast, and an excellent director all suggested that the motion picture based on Blizzard’s franchise will see the end of terrible video game movies. But sadly, following a series of mixed reviews, it looks as if this isn’t the case.

The most brutal analysis comes from The Wrap, which remarked: “Imagine Battlefield Earth without the verve, or the unintentional comedy,” and even said watching Super Mario Bros. for the second time would be preferable to giving Warcraft another viewing.

Variety said: “Hollywood's habit of turning hit video games into unwatchable movies continues unabated,” adding that “the final product brings to mind those animated advertisements for iPhone app games.”

It’s always worth remembering that a movie based on a fantasy video game series isn’t going to be for everyone; it's primarily aimed at fans. But one reviewer and longtime WoW player, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, didn’t enjoy it.

“It’s tough to get invested in a movie that feels so soulless.Warcraft has very few redeeming qualities. The performances are mediocre, the writing is full of cliches, and the cinematography is confusing when it’s trying to be clever,” Schreier wrote.

Not all critics dislikes Warcraft, though. The Hollywood Reporter summed up its review with: “Dramatically and technically, Warcraft gives the concept of “hybrid” new punch,” and Crave said it was “a flawed but likable adventure that I would happily go on again.” The latter publication even compared the movie to Willow, which is high praise in my eyes.

Out of only five reviews currently on Rotten Tomatoes, two are negative and three are positive. But it does seem as if the majority of fans are happy with the movie; director Duncan Jones retweeted the following enthusiastic message: “MG expectations met and exceeded!! Thank you so much for bringing it to life!!! 12 years I’ve waited! THE FEELS !”

Judgment should be reserved until you actually see it, but it looks as if Warcraft isn’t going to break the mold of (most) video game motion pictures being somewhere between terrible and average. But even if it’s far from great, it doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be successful - just look at the Angry Birds movie.

Let’s see if Assassin’s Creed receives a more positive reception.

I think it would be a great animated movie, if you follow some of the clips from W3 and thread it together to match the gameplay of the campaigns, but would be awesome to have the first ones history, those were great games!

“Dramatically and technically, Warcraft gives the concept of “hybrid” new punch,”

I'm sorry, what the heck does this even mean? Is this just a creative way of saying nothing at all because the person who watched it had no idea what was going on... Anyone who expected this to be a good movie has clearly never been witness to how poorly video games transcend into movies, they're almost as bad and movies being made into video games, almost...

Yeah cause tolkien made the books based on warcraft...
that's not what he was talking about. So much of Warcraft lore has been taken from LOTR

This whole movie is essentially a WoW ad that we have to pay to watch

I think using the word "hybrid" in this case means "live-action" since there are a blend of CG characters and human actors. I could be wrong though.

Besides it having humans and orcs... I don't see what other similarities or lore it has in common...

I get this feeling that the entire Warcraft movie was just low-balled and half-A$$ed. And its a shame too, because the lore is full of great story lines, tumultuous events and drama.
The expansion cutscenes are probably the closest thing you will see to someone 'giving a sh!t' about cinema with this game.

Found a negative review:
"The prospect of a predominantly white, European realm being invaded by foreign, primitive, darker skinned hordes (they are actually called the Horde) might set alarm bells ringing in our current climate of immigration anxiety. Is this a veiled Ukip broadcast? Or a pro-Trump one? Nobody suggests the orcs are there to steal Azeroth’s jobs or exploit its benefits system, thankfully, though they are intent on overrunning their adoptive country and sucking the souls out of all its living creatures."

I look at it this way, are reviews the best way to judge a movie or is word of mouth from people who you know who have seen it and if they know you like those sorts of movies?Critics today can make or break a movie which I think sucks as many critics were so so with the star wars movie which I loved and now have it on bluray and watch it once a week why? because it's a very good movie but if I had listened to the critics I may have not watched it.I wont go to see this movie will wait for a bluray release then watch it as I am over anything Blizzard at the moment.

I don't care what other people think of the movie. The first Mortal Kombat movie was badass, but it only has a 5.8 rating on imdb. I'll like this movie because I like Warcraft.

The bad thing is the WOW community was really expecting this movie to be great and was looking forward to an influx of new users based on the movie's success. It seems when the masses get together to promote a movie they believe will be great, that movie falls short. I am a gamer both on table top and video games but have never played WOW. But when I go to any movie based on any concept I go with an open mind. With that I tend to enjoy many movies that much more, except for ones like "The Last Airbender".

Nuff' said.
