Error 1606 prevents installation (of Steam)

When attempting to reinstall steam on a pc (windows 7, x64) where I had no prob on previous installations, I get the following message

error 1606. could not access network location %systemdrite%\users\public\desktop

I have googled various solutions but none seems to work.

any suggestions, wonder-workers?

Solved now - removed the registry key and rewrote it
