eSports is not a real sport according to ESPN president

Not physically exhausting?...Clearly some people on here have not ran their butts off in the virtual reality simulators. Lots of running, jumping, crouching, swinging your gun around, just one combat game gets you pretty sweaty.

Call it whatever you want, I enjoy watching video game competitions. It's semantics, and at the end of the day "eSports" are bringing in a continually rising amount of revenue.

The significance here is making the jump from PC streaming to TV networks, it may not be the time right now for this but it's coming. Our generation grew up with video games, and every generation after mine, it's only a matter of time before it becomes completely mainstream.

Whether that happens on TV or not, hard to say, TV networks may be irrelevant in 25 years. I know I have no desire for a cable subscription when I can watch my shows online, hell, I don't even own a TV, I just use my big *** monitor for entertainment.

Saying that E-sports is not a sport because it does not meet the historic definition, is like saying 'gay' does not mean homosexual because traditionally the word was used to say 'carefree' or 'happy'. People change how they use words, adding 'E' before the 'sports' part defines the activity fine, imho!

You're conflating an expression ("gay") with a classification ("homosexual"). The divide over whether or not eSport is in fact a sport concerns the classification, not the casual use of the word.

So you are saying that adding "E" to the front of sport not only makes a new definition for the new word, but changes the very definition of the word "sport" itself?

YEAH, RIGHT!

"But for ESPN to say that is a bit bizarre."

Not really. Sounds like they know what a sport is for the most part... not video gaming as it is today.

"an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

Sitting down in a chair is not PHYSICAL exertion. Sorry but no. Just no. If you thought it was, go outside and play a sport.

Unless gaming advances a ton to the point when we all have virtual reality rooms to run around in and PHYSICALLY EXERT ourselves, gaming will remain a competition. Cheer leading is an athletic competition, and certainly requires more physical exertion than video gaming, but it's a performance. It's not a sport either. Just because it's in the Olympics, it doesn't mean it's a sport either. There are just as many competitions as there are sports. Gaming is a competition. Not a sport. If it was we might as well as add dance competitions, track and field, typing as fast as you can against someone, just about anything that could be considered simply a competition is now a sport folks. Because esports... that's why.

This isn't an issue of redefining a word for the newer generations, as most of this newer generation doesn't consider gaming a "sport" either. Sorry to burst your internet bubble. It's enough people confused about what a sport is and trying to replace the word "competition" with "sport."
