Excel Insert Column & prevent formula change

  1. Column A has formulas $C1-$D1. I want to insert a column in front of C which will cause the new data in C to subtract data in D but Excel changes the formula to $D1-$E1 when I insert a column. How can I make the formula remain the same no matter what changes in worksheet?
