After turning off everything I could (all the way down to turning off services and explorer), MSInfo reports 130 MBs available from 512. Is that normal for Windows XP SP2 with nothing running?

hey Xythoses

To the best of my knowledge that is definately NOT normal for XP SP2 with nothing else running....As to whats causing u'r RAM to be in use i'm not sure of . The usage should actually be the other way around ... i.e. the 130 should be whats used and not whats left over if nothing else is running. Check in the task manager under the processes tab what exactly is using up the memory and report back.

Press Ctrl Alt and delete at the same time.
This will open task manager.

Download Memtest From HERE. There is also instructions on how to use it there.

here's my stats

Code:
Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 209.46 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 1.40 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

As Only the Windows/* OS can manipulate real memory
the Available Physical Memory is a non-issue and should be ignored,
as your programs are ONLY sensitive to Available Virtual Memory
