External Hard Disc Drive Failure

I recently purchased a new maxtor external hard drive to back up an existing Buslink external drive. As soon as I plugged the usb connection from the new maxtor to the pc, it took about 30 seconds for the Buslink drive to fail. The Buslink still has electrical power (at least the led green light is on) but the drive beeps like an alarm clock for several seconds then stops. It is clear that the hard drive in the Buslink is not spinning. I tried disconnecting the maxtor as well as trying the buslink on another computer--the results remain the same.

Can anybody speculate as to what happened and...what can I do to back up the data. One techie at a local computer store said it sounds like a housing failure (not a big deal) while another techie said that "drives just don't beep" unless they're in very serious trouble.

I did take a peek inside the casing-I see no burn marks etc...or any clear signs that it shorted out.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks to all in advance.
