Hey guys,
whenever i boot my computer, i receive a message at the notification area/system tray telling me that i have files waiting to be written on cd, and to click on the balloon if i want to view them. I thought it was a virus or something but then i guess it's not because i have an updated Norton anti virus software installed. How can i go about this. Somebody out there help please!

It means that you used the Windows builtin CD-burning utility somehow and managed to tell it to write some files on a CD.

If you don't want to write these files, just open the list and delete everything from there.

as Nodsu said, you must keep the CD tray empty and access the drive and delete all files visible to recycle bin.
the files were there because someone must have copied them to the CD drive and mustnt have burned the CD, or you must have accidently copied these files [either by send-to or by drag and drop] to this drive, due to which, an image was prepared that can be burnt whenever you want.
it's like a song playlist.
.
this is due to the integrated windows CD burner and can be disabled by
go to "my computer"
right-click on "properties"
under "recording" tab uncheck "enable cd recording on this drive"
