FW: Trend Micro Personal Firewall
FW: ZoneAlarm Firewall.

Could be having 2 firewalls instead of only one caused the problem. Please remove one of these FW. If you can't find a way to disable or uninstall, disable Zone Alarm until you can call Comcast

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE .
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I'll be back with Combofix review.

It appears that Combofix did scan> twice previously as it deleted files from 2 runs.
It also looks like you're using an infected flash drive.These worms travel through your portable drives. If they have been connected to other machines, they may now be infected.

Please disinfect all movable drives
  1. Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
    Note: Some security programs will flag Flash_Disinfector as being some sort of malware, you can safely ignore these warnings
  3. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  4. Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  5. Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.
=================
Please run this Custom CFScript:

Glad to hear that! I hope something didn't get messed up. My husband came home and opened my email program about 2 minutes or so before combofix finished up, but here's the log from it:

Almost there! I have stopped a Registry entry from running for TrendMicro Firewall and removed the entry from the Combofix header. I have also removed 2 processes for Sunbelt Counterspy Antiroot program. It does not show installed and may be something Comcast put on the system. The problem with running background processes you aren't aware of is the potential for conflicts with other programs.

Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.

    [3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap'> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:Be sure to scroll down to include ALL lines.
Code:
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\SBREDrv.sys

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\TrendFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
SecCenter::
{829BDA32-94B3-44F4-8446-F8FCFF809F8B}
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

These Scheduled Tasks should be stopped
2011-03-18 c:\windows\Tasks\RegCure.job
2011-03-31 c:\windows\Tasks\RegCure Program Check.job

To stop a scheduled task that is running
1.Open Scheduled Tasks.: Click Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Click Scheduled Tasks.
2.Right-click the task that you want to stop, and then click End Task.
Note: If a scheduled task is started and then stopped, End Task does not stop all other programs that the scheduled task might have started.
Note: If you stop a scheduled task that is currently running, you might experience a delay (up to three minutes) before the task shuts down.

I have some removals for HijackThis. You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder[/size]

  1. 1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.
    2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:
    3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
    4. Close ALL windows except HJT
    5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
    6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')
Please make sure you post the entire log including the top portion:
=========================================
DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER
============================================
I have the removals already but want the log in it's own directory to protect the backups. Do not run the following untill you have placed HJ log as follows mentioned as it a more secure place..
============================================
Please send me a report on the system performance.

I don't know if this matters or not, but I did do as you instructed the first time and made the HijackThis Folder on C: and ran it from there, so I don't know why it's saying it was run from a temp folder, I double checked and the folder and file are still there, but I went ahead and did it again, exactly the same, but called the folder HJT, hope it worked like it was supposed to. Here's the log:

I have one question:
Are you aware that Comcast puts several programs on the computer when you sign up? These can conflict with security programs you have on the system. I can remove these processes with script for Combofix and also have you stop them, then uninstall in HijackThis.

Would you like me to do his? You do not need any of these programs to connect to the internet.

Bottom line: I don't see any malware remaining and I believe you said Firefox is not connecting. Is that correct? Are there ant other problems related to the redirect remaining?

I have both HijackThis and Combofix removals set up for you, but they are optional. Be aware of this:
  1. FYI: 12 processes are loading for SmarThru4. This process does not need to start on boot and run in the background, using system resources. It can be accessed through either All Programs of File> Print
  2. FYI: Startup: Desktop Alert.lnk c:\program files\Desktop Alert\liveonline_3836970.exe The Desktop Alert Solution is perfect for Emergency warnings, Corporate notifications, Marketing/Special Offers, Event notifications, Breaking news, Distant Learning, etc. This has several possibilities:

  3. FYI: Some of the following are loading on boot- none need to be. I recommend you uncheck and of them on the Startup Menu using the msconfig utility (instructions availabble if needed)

  4. If you don't want to make any of the changes I have mentioned in this or the previous reply:
Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
    [*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
    [*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Well, I've got to say you are thorough and AWESOME! I've not had anymore issues with re-directing. I do have some issues though that have popped up since starting all of this. I can't get Firefox to be the browser all the time for links. Sometimes it's Firefox, sometimes it's IE, I do not like IE and that's not where all my bookmarks etc are. Also, I cannot open Adobe Reader and I do need to be able to do that, so any help there is appreciated.

I would like instructions for changing the start-up, as I've tried before, but it would never let me, I would keep getting an error message, so maybe I was doing something incorrectly.

I will trust whatever you tell me to do, regarding these matters, you've not steered me wrong yet. :)

I'm glad you've been pleased and that we have solved most of the problems:

About Firefox vs Internet Explorer: To set Firefox as the default browser- the browser that opens the links, you have to do 2 things:

1. Open Firefox> Tools> Options> Advanced> General tab> System Defaults> Check 'always check to see if Firefox is the default'> Click on Check now> Click Yes to confirm you want it for the default.

2. Access Internet Options either through Tools in IE or the Control Panel> Programs tab> bottom of screen:Uncheck 'Internet Explorer should always check to see if it's the default'> Click on Apply> OK. (If anything comes up about ''default" say NO)
==========================================
To remove entries from the Startup Menu using the msconfig utility:
  • Click on Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter>
    msconfig_open_xp.gif
  • Click on Selective Startup
  • Choose the Startup tab:
    startup_tab_xp.gif

    All images courtesy NetSquirrel
  • To expand the Command Column, (this shows what the process 'belongs' to) hold left mouse button down on the dividing line on frame above Location and move to the right to expand.
  • Uncheck any processes you do not want to start on boot.
  • Click on Apply> OK when finished.
NOTE:
When you reboot the system the first time after making changes using the msconfig utility, a nag message comes up that can be ignored and closed after checking 'don't show this message again.' Remain in Selective Startup to retain those changes.
(I think this is the 'error message' you referred to)
The only processes that need to be on that Startup menu are:

  • Antivirus program
    3rd Party firewall if you have one like Comodo or ZoneAlarm
    Touchpad if you're on a laptop
    Network process(es) if you use NetworkMagix.Citrix
That's all! No printer, media player, camera, scanner, no Java, no Adobe

The nag message is what scares most people if they don't expect it and know what to do. All of my system have gone on Selective Startup by the second day I've had them and they have all run fine! I've never understood why Microsoft makes it sound 'bad to do this and displays that message!

Note: Some of the processes you want to remove may have a Service related to it. Once you have decided what you want off of the Startup Menu and unchecked the processes, I'll help you deal with those.
===================================
Adobe Reader: What happens when you try to open it? Are you trying to open a PDF program, because you don't need to open Adobe to do it. The PDF document should open in Abobe when you click on it.

There is an alternative to the Adobe Reader. It's free, it does the same thing and it doesn't have the bloat like Adobe does: FoxItPDF Reader: HERE.
This is a much smaller program, without bloat which allows you to do the same as Adobe. When you see the Foxit Reader Install Wizard below:
unchecktomakeAskasdefaultsearchprovider_thumb.png

Make sure you do the following:
  • Uncheck "make Ask my browser default search provider."
  • Uncheck "Set Ask.com as my homepage."
  • Click on Decline to prevent the Foxit Search Bar, also from Ask.com,from installing
  • Installation will then continue

You can then uninstall the Adobe Reader in Add/Remove Programs and delete it's program folder and files in Windows Explorer.
(I usually use the homesite for downloads, but Foxit also has a paid version with additional features that you don't need> their home page has both free and paid right in front of you and it's easy to choose wrong one. Only disadvantage is that you need to be sure to uncheck all those prechecked processes.
============================================
If you are going to work from the list I left to take off of startup, don't do them all at one time. Do about 4 and reboot, 4 more and reboot. Set a System Restore Point before each group.

It won't let me make any changes, just like before, it says Access Denied error was returned, you may need to login in as Admin. I am logged in as an admin, in addition, there were only 4 on the list you gave me that were on the startup list. What should I do now? There were also several programs that didn't look familiar at all, for example bcmsmmsg.

OKay - I will probably get a chance to do this next week, maybe over the weekend. It's spring break here and my daughter is coming home tomorrow and we're taking a mini vacation together, so won't be on the computer much for the next several days. I'll post when I do it. Thanx!
