You'll find that most ‘Best Star Wars games of all time’ lists will almost always contain Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in the top five. It may be over 15 years old, but Bioware’s magnificent RPG is still regarded as one of the greatest titles to bear the Star Wars name. So loved is KOTOR, that fans took it upon themselves to make a reboot using Unreal Engine 4, and the first video of the project has arrived.

Atlanta-based development group Poem Studios is behind Knights of the Old Republic: Apeiron. The game features all of the content found in the original, including vocals and music, but it also adds new worlds, missions, HUD, inventory, items, and companions.

The video shows a very early version of the game, so there’s quite a bit of stuttering and some graphical glitches. But the main, obvious difference is, unlike the previous KOTOR games, Apeiron is played from a first-person perspective.

YouTuber MrMattyPlays, who shared the footage having been given access by the team, says that there will be the option to play in third-person as well. The round-based combat also seems to have been abandoned in favor of real-time fighting, although the end product may be a combination of the two.

As it uses the original game’s audio and music, you’ll have to own a copy of the first KOTOR to play Apeiron. Other than that caveat, it will be totally free.

Hopefully, Apeiron won’t run into any legal issues and help bring new life to this classic title, much in the same way that Black Mesa did for Half Life. There’s no timeline for completion, but if you feel you have something to offer the project, then you can join the team and contribute to this updated version of one of the greatest Star Wars games of all time.
