format C: but not D:

Hi

This question has probably been asked a million times but i searched and couldn't find

- so, can anyone point me to a thread dealing with this subject, please ?

here it is:
Quite simply, I need to format my C: partition (system) and clean re-install Win XP from the CD but without affecting the D: partition (data) - I have backed up a lot of the data on D: but I would rather it was left entirely untouched

is there a fool-proof procedure for formatting just the C: ?

Boot the XP install CD. Start a new installation. You are prompted which partition to install WIndows to. Select your C: and choose to format it. Continue XP setup as normal.
