fps suddenly gone low - gfx card

By earthshock
Aug 30, 2007
  1. i play fifa 07 and madden 07 regularly.. since the past couple of weeks the fps seem to hv gone low as a result the games r no longer smooth (in short the game seems to "stutter" it never happened before) ./. how do i trblshoot? wht might be the problem? just fyi screen does not freeze, so i dont think overheating is a prblm. also 2 days back i opened the comp and cleaned thoroughly.. so no dust inside now. fans run well. i also installed that fan control software & kept fans running on high speed but the prblm persists. so heating def no an issue i guess.
also while watching long (> 20 mins) online videos on youtube or similar site they are now stuttering.

comp details: dell xps inspi gen 1 w/ 3.4 ghz proc
    ati mobility radeon 128 mb
    1 gb ram
    35 gb free hd space
ran avg free virus scan twice.. nada detected
ran and removed spyware using spybot
also ran lavasoft adaware & avg free spyware remover.. so i guess pc is virtually free of maliciousware
    plz suggest

I had pretty much the same problem with stuttering awhile back. So I fooled around with it and decided to try and turn on Hyperthreading in my bios, and it worked. So if you have Hyperthreading capabilities try that.

any new additions to the software on your computer? having more processes running can trigger a slowdown...common causes are new anti-virus/anti-malware software and their real-time monitoring...or various malwares infecting your computer, esp. trojans and downloaders. even though your scans came back clean, run a hijack this and post the log file.

there's a couple of startup processes there that you don't necessarily need, like the quicktime and itunes ones. however instead of deleting the entries in hjt i'd recommend unticking them in msconfig (click start then run and type in "msconfig" without quotes) under the startup tab because you can always tick them again later if you want them to run again.

otherwise your log is quite clean as far as i can tell
