freeze 30 secs after start up

    can anyone shed light on why a new ati radeon 9550 card works under xp but is not happy under 98?
    there is a dual boot set up and the installation worked fine under xp, but every time I start 98 it freezes up after a minute or so. I have uninstalled all previous drivers and tried to install ati' s driver for 98.
    any suggestions?
