Freezing Issue

okay i just bought a amd 1ghz comp from a friend and it keeps freezing ive tried removing all extra stuff, formatting (dos format, xp format ) and a bunch of things u name it i prob. tried it Yelp!
the exact specs are

You already re-installed XP and still get these freezes?

I would do the following shotgun approach:

1. Update bios
2. Update chipset drivers and ALL other hardware drivers
3. Run www.memtest.org on my memory to see if my ram is failing
4. Run a hard drive diagnosis program on the HDD to test it (you can usually get one from your HDD maker's website

Also, right click on "my computer" then "manage" then "event viewer" and see what kinds of errors are being reported to try and get some hints as to what is causing the freezes in there.
