General graphic distortion in startup and video multicolored bars/horizontal lines

  1. I tried the search function, but I couldn't find anything that fit what I seemed to be looking for.

The nature of my problem is that in the startup, graphics, video, etc., there are multicolored (generally green) graphic distortions (not quite sure what else to call them) taking the shape of boxes and both horizontal and vertical lines. As well, the mouse is severely distorted as well - various lines go across it horizontally and as the lines go across the mouse, the gaps are transparent. Needless to say, this makes it somewhat hard to see.

My video card (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro) has been working flawlessly, and I have never had a single graphic problem since I've had this computer. Below is the data gathered from dxdiag in case it's needed:

Name: 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9800
    Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
    Chip Type: Radeon 9800AGP
    DAC Type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
    Approx. Total Memory: 128.0 MB
    Current Display Mode: 1280x1024 (32 bit)(75Hz)
    Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor

    Main Driver: ati2dvag.dll
    Version: 6.14.0001.6297
    Date: 4/8/2003
    WHQL Logo'd: Yes
    Mini VDD: ati2mtag.sys
    VDD: n/a
    DDI Version: 9 (or Higher)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
    Memory: 1022MB RAM
Page file: 195MB used, 2268MB Available
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

If you require any other information, I'd be happy to provide it.

    Thank you.
