I have been getting this error message on my Dell XP Windows program for a couple of months. It has affected my sound, my lower tool bar, and possibly my CD/DVD drives, as they are not functioning properly. I have read the forums regarding this problem and I have run a complete virus scan and continue to receive the msg. Does anyone have other suggestions for me?

Generic Host Process for Win 32 Srvices.......

hum; how about a detail error message?

szAppName:svchost.exe
szAppVer:5.1 2600.2180

szModName:Kernel 32.dll
svModVer:5.1 2600.3119 offset 00018943

ok that's a start; we know WHO and what version -- still need the error text
eg Event ID: xxxx Source yyy Category zzz
if you click the third button from the top-right, you can then
PASTE the info into your reply :)

I think this is probably not what you want............as you must know, you are dealing with a novice--definitely your random act of kindness. This is the additional info that I could find.
C:\DOCUME~\HOME\LOCALS~1\Temp\WEROd61.dir00\svchost.exe.mfmp
C:\DOCUME~1\HOME\LOCALS~1\Temp\WEROd61.dir00\appcom[at/txt

Does any of this help? Where might I find the Event ID, etc?

oops; my oversight

cp->Admin Tools->Comp Mgmt->Event Viewer
look for the Error (red circle, white X)
COPY the info then PASTE in follow-up

(should be under System Events)

OOPS!! When I clicked Comp Mgmt I got an error msg saying out of memory. When I said OK, I then got this msg. Snap-in failed to initialize
Name:performance Logs and Alert Extension
CLSID:{7478EF65-8C46-11D1-8D99-00A0C913CAD4} Does this tell you anything? I had received a new memory card which my son installed for me about a month ago. However, I had been receiving this Generic Host........prior to his installation. What now? Thank you so much for your patience!

XP $what$? Home vs Pro?

You're going to need to boot into Safe Mode
boot, and while the BIOS data goes by (or when the Dell Logo shows up)
start tapping F8 until you get a B/W screen.

there's a prompt for Safe Mode, use the arrow keys to move the cursor and hit <enter>

it will prompt for the Admin Password (frequently it is just empty; so hit <enter> again)
otherwise enter the password.

you should be able to get to the Event View and PASTE the data into Notepad and
save it, say C:\event-errors.txt so you can get it again when online.

you can also use run->msconfig to set diagnostic boot
click Boot.INI tab, [x] /safeboot (to keep control for now)

Later we can use the Services Tab to control the startup services

I have followed your instructions into safe mode and event view. I am not given an option to copy/paste, but I can save to notepad. However, when I bring it up it is very garbled and extensive. Sorry!

goodness. try run->SFC /SCANNOW to see if you can fix some of the system files

I did the sfc /scannow. It took several minutes and performed the exercise, but there was no report or error message received.
