Google and HP have asked US-based stores selling the HP Chromebook 11 to take the product off the market following reports of a small number of chargers overheating. News of the Chromebook 11’s disappearance on store shelves at Best Buy first hit the web courtesy of The Verge although HP has since confirmed the issue.
In a message to the publication, an HP spokesperson said Google and HP are pausing sales of the HP Chromebook 11 as they investigate the overheating claims. They are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify the appropriate corrective action and will provide additional information and instructions as soon as they are available.
In the meantime, those that already own an HP Chromebook 11 are urged not to use the original charger that came with the notebook. Those affected may continue to use the system with any other Underwriters Laboratories-listed micro-USB charger like one provided with a tablet or a smartphone.
The duo announced the Chromebook 11 last month at an event in New York City. The system borrows some design cues from the Chromebook Pixel but without the expensive price tag. Priced at $279, the system included an 11.6-inch IPS panel with a lowly resolution of 1366 x 768, a Samsung dual-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM and a 16GB solid state drive. The specs aren’t anything to write home about but it is more than enough to power Chrome OS and basic web tasks.
