Google has announced that it will now let users download their Gmail and Calendar data through Google Takeout. This means you will no longer have to rely solely on Google to backup your precious Gmail and Calendar data. "Having access to your data and being able to take it with you is important, especially if that data contains precious memories", Google software engineer, Nick Piepmeier, said in a blog post on Thursday.

Google Takeout is a tool that allows you to easily download your data associated with various Google products. You can create either customized archives or a single archive containing data from all the supported products like Drive, Hangouts, Voice, Blogger, Youtube, and more. To create an archive, just go to https://accounts.google.com/ and click Download your data under the Account section.

Data downloaded from Calendar will be available in the iCalendar format, and that from Gmail will be available in the MBOX format, thereby making it easy to import from other e-mail services like Apple’s Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Microsoft Outlook. Gmail users can either download the complete inbox or narrow it down to a subset of labels -- same goes for the Calendar data.

Google won't let you export data more than three times a day, and more than seven times total per week. However, you don't need to worry about manually deleting the old archives as they get auto-deleted after seven days of creation. While Calendar data is available for download right away, Gmail users will have to wait as the option to download e-mails will be rolled out next month.

The announcement is nothing less than a granted wish especially for those Gmail users who have suffered major jolts in the past.
