Google Redirect - 8 steps completed

By ab11viva
Nov 21, 2009
  1. Hello,

I followed the 8-step process and I have attached the required logs. I'd really appreciate any guidance you can provide.

My computer has been running very slowly for a while now and the startup is extremely slow - I am also having an issue with Google redirecting my search results to ad sites.

    Thanks

Given this a little bump - hopefully, one of the experts could help me out.

    Thanks

A Trojan and rootkit virus was found... I don't think all nasties were removed. You will have to perform a more thorough cleaning

    Thanks for the response.

So, what tools would I need to perform a more thorough cleaning? I'm assuming that his would require an application that I haven't already used?

The Kaspersky Online Scanner may be good to run first... Combofix should be used last. You have to follow the instructions very carefully. Combofix is very powerful, but it can create more trouble if you are not very, very careful

Welcome to TechSpot, aab11viva. My apology for the delay. We would appreciate your patience in place of the bumps- this is a very busy forum.

The main reason your computer is slow is because you have too many processes starting up, then running in the background. For instance> why load your web cam every time you log on? Why can't you just launch it from All Programs? Same for Power DVD, Real Player, Dell Media, Dell Support, WinZip (did you know that Windows XP has it's own compression/decompression tool and that you don't need to use this for zip files?)

Did you know that the only processes you need on startup are the antivirus program, third party firewall if you have one, touchpad if using a laptop and possible entry for network like Network Magic?. You don't need anything else to start on boot and run in the background.
You are getting malware from the game downloads.Dell includes Wild Tangent in their console.

    What is Wild Tangent?

If you would like more description of Wild Tangent and Manual Removal instructions, please see this:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtml

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only.' Check the following if present:

    O4 - Global Startup: Exif Launcher.lnk = ?
    >>> Part of C:\Program Files\FinePixViewer\QuickDCF.exe
Description: USB mass storage driver used by some digital cameras such as the Fuji Finepix. Only required if you use it regularly.)
NOTE: the Global Startup means that it will start up on every account that logs on)

    O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {9e2f3767-a188-4dce-b9bb-d2dc6b76b1fa} - (no file)

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

Let's see if there is any Rootkit around:
    Please download ComboFix HERE:
    • With ComboFix, at the download window, please rename it to Combo-Fix(.exe) before downloading it.
    • Please disable all security programs, such as antiviruses, antispywares, and firewalls. Also disable your internet connection.
    • Run Combo-Fix.exe and follow the prompts.
(Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.)
    • Wait for the scan to be completed.
    • If it requires a reboot, please do it.
    • After the scan has completed entirely, please post the log here. The log will be located at C:\ComboFix(.txt)

    Notes:

    • 1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
      2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
      3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
      4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Please attach the Combofix report to your next reply.

Rescan with HijackThis and paste new log in next reply.

Looks good. Have you notice any improvement in the speed? You still have a lot of unnecessary startups that can slow you down.

What about the redirects? Have they stopped.

    Please change this Service:

Click on Start> Run> type in services.msc> OK> find Dell Game Console And/or WildTangent and do a double-click> Change the Startup type to Disabled> Stop the Service. Close

I'd like you to run an online AV scan:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus Scanner HERE

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
    • When asked, allow the Active X control to install
    • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
    • Click Start
    • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
    • Click Scan
    • Wait for the scan to finish
    • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
    • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Attach the log in next reply.

Thanks - I do believe that my redirect issue has been resolved and my system appears to be operating a little faster. What other programs should I disable on startup? I thought I did pretty much everything except McAfee.

Please download OTMovit by Old Timer and save to your desktop.
    • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
    • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

      Code:
      :Processes

      :Services

      :Reg

      :Files
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Downloads\SWAT4Setup-dm.exe
      C:\Downloads\AirStrike3DSetup-dm.exe

      :Commands
      [purity]
      [emptytemp]
      [start explorer]
      [Reboot]
    • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window and choose Paste.
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
    • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You have two adware infections from TryMedia. Understand that if you continue to use this site, you are likely to continue to get adware or other malware:
Trymedia Systems, Inc. is a division of RealNetworks that provides digital distribution services based on its proprietary ActiveMARK DRM and digital distribution technology.

I'd like to check one more HijackThis scan, so please do that and leave new log. If all is okay, I'll have you remove the cleaning tools and set new restore point.

As for what you need on Startup:

Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter> Selective Startup> Startup tab> going by your last HJT log, you can uncheck any processes for:

Blog This in Windows Live Writer
    Apple\Mobile Device Support\
    Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe
    DellSupport and related processes
    jqs> Java Quick Start
    Microsoft LifeCam\MSCamS32
    'Real' and any related processes
    Google Photos Screensa&ver

When finished: Apply> OK Reboot into Safe Mode>> NOTE: first reboot after making changes brings up nag message- ignore and close after checking 'don't show this message again.' Stay in Selective Startup.

You will be ale to access anything you unchecked in All Programs or shortcuts.

Start> Run> type in services.msc> OK> double-click on each> Disable Service> Stop the Service> Change the Startup type as indicated:

    AppleMobileDeviceService>> Manual
    Bonjour Service/mDNSResponder>> Manual
    DSBrokerService (DellSupport brkrsvc>> Disable
    GameConsoleService>> Manual
Google Updater Service (gusvc) >> Disable
    iPod Service -Manual
    JavaQuickStarterService- jqs>> Disable

Reboot back into Normal Mode. Services will start when needed.

Log looks clean. IF the problem has been resolved, you can remove the cleaning tools as follows:

Uninstall ComboFix.exe And all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START> then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
    • DownloadOTCleanIt by OldTimer
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.

You should now set a new Restore Point to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points. The easiest and safest way to do this is:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new Restore Point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
    • Go to "Disk Cleanup" which can be found by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
    • Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you desire.
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Stay safe! Let me know of you need more help in the future.

You're welcome! Here are some tips for you:

Please follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.Disable and Enable System Restore: This will help you to drop the old restore points and set a new, clean one:

    System Restore Guide

    2.Stay current on updates:
    • Visit the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently.
You should get All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates:Windows 2000> SP4, Windows XP> SP2, SP3, Vista> SP2
    • Visit this Adobe Reader site often and make sure you have the most current update. Uninstall any earlier updates as they are vulnerabilities.
    • Check this site often.Java Updates Stay current as most updates are for security. Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs.

3.Make Internet Explorer safer. Follow the suggestions HERE
This Tutorial will help guide you through Configuring Security Settings, Managing Active X Controls and other safety features.

4.Remove Temporary Internet Files regularly: Use
    5. Use an AntiVirus Software(only one)
    6.Use a good, bi-directional firewall(one software firewall)
[*]See Understanding and Using Firewalls including links to download a firewall.

7.Consider these programs for Extra Security
    • Spywareblaster:
    • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX. It places kill bits to stop bad Active X controls from being installed. Remember to update it regularly.
    • IE/Spyad
    • This places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • MVPS Hosts files This replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
    • Google Toolbar Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
