Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help with the problem but you need to do the following first:

Uninstall or disable Vuze, Vuze Toolbar, emule & the Orbit Downloader. These are all related to file sharing and should not be used while cleaning.

And since you're having a problem finding the malware, please disable Unhackme while I'm helping you. CD Emulation programs can affect scan results: this will be for Daemon Lite and any other emulation program you may have running:

To disable using DeFogger please perform these steps:
  1. . Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
    Link: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/jpshortstuff/Defogger.exe
  2. . Once downloaded, double-click on the DeFogger icon to start the tool.
  3. . The application window will now appear. You should now click on the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  4. . When it prompts you whether or not you want to continue, please click on the Yes button to continue
  5. . When the program has completed you will see a Finished! message. Click on the OK button to exit the program.
  6. . If CD Emulation programs are present and have been disabled,
DeFogger will now ask you to reboot the machine. Please allow it to do so by clicking on the OK button.
=================================
When we have finished, use the instructions below in the quote to enable the emulations again:
To enable CD Emulation programs using DeFogger please perform these steps:
  1. . Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
  2. . Once downloaded, double-click on the DeFogger icon to start the tool.
  3. . The application window will now appear. You should now click on the Enable button to enable your CD Emulation drivers
  4. . When it prompts you whether or not you want to continue, please click on the Yes button to continue
  5. . When the program has completed you will see a Finished! message. Click on the OK button to exit the program.
DeFogger will now ask you to reboot the machine. Please allow it to do so by clicking on the OK button.

Download Combofix to your desktop from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Query- Recovery Console image
    RcAuto1.gif

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes it will open a text window. Please paste that log in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Leave Eset and Combofi logs in next reply.

I see ESET has picked up a trojan. Quick question for you... how is it that Avast missed it?

Avast is primarily an antivirus program. You can't expect it alone to protect the system from different types of malware> this is why we recommend layered security. The Win32/Bamital.EZ trojan has been a very frequent flyer. Here some information about it:

Trojan:Win32/Bamital.A is a trojan often installed by other malware. It monitors and modifies Web search queries and displays advertisements. It is triggered when the browser is Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari.

Payload
Modifies browsing behavior- patches and redirects the following functions of the Windows Socket module, which are used by the browser, to its malicious routine so it can monitor and modify Web search queries and offer its own online advertisements:

May also send and download additional information from the following Web servers:
* mynewworldorder.cn
* search-nows.cn
* wonder-how.cn
* world1domination.co.cc
It infects c:\windows\explorer.exe and logon.exe
If AV programs stopped or quarantined all malware, the world would be a better place! But I can tell you that if you continue using file sharing, you will continue to get malware.

For the record, I have AVAST and UnHackme running, and Malwarebytes didn't pick anything up either. Are there any other programs you'd reccomend?

Since this run of combofix, UnHackMe is now reporting a Vanquish Rootkit... I won't let UnHackMe attempt to clean it and I'll wait for your further instructions.

Thanks,
Alf

I had asked you to disable Unhackme while I was helping clean the system. Since we don't use that program, please run this:

catchme is the rootkit/stealth malware scanner that scans for:
  • hidden processes
  • hidden registry keys
  • hidden services
  • hidden files
catchme can also delete, destroy and collect malicious files.

Download catchme.exe ( 137KB ) and save to your desktop.
  • Double click the catchme.exe to run it
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • Open catchme.log to see results

Copy the log to Notepad, making sure that 'Word Wrap' is unchecked in Format. Then paste the log in your next reply.

I did disable it but it started up again when the last program rebooted the computer. I've now uninstalled it just in case.

I'll run catchme now.

Let's see if this picks up Vanquish:
RootkitRevealer successfully detects many persistent rootkits including AFX, Vanquish and HackerDefender (note: RootkitRevealer is not intended to detect rootkits like Fu that don't attempt to hide their files or registry keys).

For best results exit all applications and keep the system otherwise idle during the RootkitRevealer scanning process.
Download Root Revealer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the file to launch.
  • Press the Scan button. RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list.
  • The following are checked by default> leave them checked:
    [o] Hide NTFS Metadata Files
    [o] Scan Registry:
  • If infected, you should see an image similar to the following:
bb897445.RootkitRevealer(en-us,MSDN.10).gif

Please copy log and leave in next reply.

I ran that program and it appears to have compatibility issues with Vista.

It ran but vista would open up a 'Interactive services dialogue box' saying that the program can't display a message on the desktop. I can then click 'Show me the message' where it then takes me to a grey background screen with the program running in the middle. I could do a scan, but it would log me out. Now I can't produce a lot...

However, it found a lot of discrepencies... a lot...

Is there anyway I can run this on vista? Do I have to run it in an XP compatibility mode?

Please give the Rootkit Revealer another try:
Title: Rootkit Revealer 1.71
Filename: RootkitRevealer.zip
File size: 226KB (231,390 bytes)
Requirements: Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / Windows7

Regarding the RKR log: The log can be very large, please edit out the items in the following folders if in the log, before posting it.
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information.

So understand that just because you see a lot of entries, does not mean they are all 'bad.'

I tried again and got the same error and same desktop error problems. It still says the program can't display a message on the desktop. I then have to click 'Show Me The Message', it then goes black and then takes me to a grey background screen, without the desktop on the bottom. The program is there like in your screen shot. I can click scan... it scans and then after a few seconds logs me out.

I wait a while for the scan to finish. Log back on. The 'can't display message' is still there. I click the 'show me message button again, it takes me back to the grey not-desktop page again and the scan is finished...

...but when I try to click the menus it changes the screen white, the rows of information move to the top left and the menu disappears.

For the record, I have AVAST and UnHackme running,
Since this run of combofix, UnHackMe is now reporting a Vanquish Rootkit... I won't let UnHackMe attempt to clean it and I'll wait for your further instructions.

I had asked you to disable Unhackme while I was helping clean the system.

I did disable it but it started up again when the last program rebooted the computer. I've now uninstalled it just in case.

I already said Unhackme is uninstalled.

Since you dropped the Vanquish finding from Unhackme on me, I have been attempted to see if it showing up anywhere besides the Unhackme find. So far, it isn't, so I will ignore it.

Please download OTMovit by Old Timer and save to your desktop.

File move failed. C:\Windows\temp\_avast5_\Webshlock.txt scheduled to be moved on reboot.

You might be interested to know that this was Total Files Cleaned = 497.00 mb- in OTM. This tells me that you aren't doing any maintenance on the system such as Disc Cleanup, Defrag, removing programs and apps you don't use, etc. This is almost half of a GB of 'space.'

Please tell me if you are still getting the redirects or if there are any other malware-related problems.

Okay, almost there. Please run Hijackthis so I can check for bad entries. After I check that log, I'll have you remove the cleaning tools:

Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Use Windows Explorer: Windows key + E> To show Hidden Folders/Files>
  • Open My Computer.

Now click on Application data for this user: C:\Users\Alf\AppData\Local\Temp\> Look for each of the BOLD entries> do a right click> Delete on any you find.
Go back and rehide the files and folders.Exit Windows explorer.
Reboot.

Rescan with HJT and paste in the new log in next reply.

I don't use GoToAssist, but I do use LogMeIn on occasion to act as IT support for my mum. Are they the same thing? Or I could have possibly tried using that before LogMeIn.

I'll follow the rest of your instructions now.

When in safe mode and looking at services.msc I found all of those entries, they were set to manual and were already stopped.

I found none of them in the C:\Users\Alf\AppData\Local\Temp\ folder.

And here is the HJT scan result:

LogMeIn is the Remote Access software. GoToAssist is the name of the company that does the remote help. I don't know who the "IT guy" is. If it is someone other than that company, remove the GoToAssist entries, but leave LogMeIn. Whoever the "IT guy" is might use the same remote software program to access the system.
