Google has announced that it will build its seventh YouTube Space production studio in Mumbai, India - the second of its kind to be located in Asia. YouTube has partnered with one of the continent’s largest and most prestigious film schools, Whistling Woods International, to set up the facility.

The YouTube Space initiative was started to give YouTube content producers free access to audio, visual and editing equipment. It also offers workshops, studio space, training programs and community events. Since it first launched in 2012, YouTube Space studios have appeared in LA, London, New York City, Sao Paulo and Berlin, and have attracted thousands of hopeful filmmakers.

“India is seeing an emergence of a new generation of YouTube creators who are capturing the color, music, humour, and drama of India more creatively than ever before. In fact, Indian creators are now amongst the top contributors in Asia when it comes to driving time spent on YouTube watching videos,” David Macdonald, Head of YouTube Spaces in Asia Pacific, said in a blog post.

The latest YouTube Space will be located in Filmcity, a media complex situated near Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Goregaon East, Mumbai. It will feature a 250-seat Digital Cinema, a Dolby Digital Film Surround Mix Studio, 7 HD Edit Suites, and more. Google did not reveal exactly when the production facility will launch but did say: "We'll be opening the gates for all creators soon.”

India is the second-most populous nation in the world and is seeing an ever increasing number of investments from technology firms. A combination of cheap data prices and hardware has resulted in the number of smartphone users skyrocket in recent years. The country also boasts the third biggest YouTube viewership in the world, sitting behind the UK and the US.
