Alright, I'm on a hp mini that is more diseased than a 50 year old hooker. Thing's got problems (being an hp notwithstanding).
I've been on a mac for the past... 10 years... so this crap irks me especially. *rage*

Also... is 49 processes upon start up normal...? thing takes decades to boot, and every couple minutes norton runs up and lets me know it went peepee in the potty. yes, i know norton sucks. if this were my personal laptop i'd probably not be running a lot of things on here. my windows versed friends being normal human beings and asleep at 3am, hopefully you can help me. I really appreciate it and am awed at your knowledge already.

We do not 'screen' for malware with HijackThis.

I'm trying to go through the steps there but get stuck trying to update windows.

Clicking the Windows update button from the start menu, or entering the address for the update both yeilds the same result.

"Internet Explorer(or firefox, I tried that too) cannot display the webpage."

I'm very clearly connected to the internet.
