Hard drive help

I have a dell E510 that i am trying to fix for my mom. the original hard drive just decided to die one rainy day:::. i tried to reload the os on the old hard drive but the os would not stay on. so my I bought a western digital 500 gb SATA hard drive. I've hit yet another wall. When i go to load the os on it cant find the hard drive at all. Any suggestions that might get the hard drive recognized?
P.S. everything but the hard drive works on this system

how do i get the drivers working without an os?

thanks lol sorry if i seem nooby on this site. It's not until recently that i have been doing system builds and learning how to replace certain new parts on an older computer
