If this is a new drive, then having less capacity is normal, due to formatting the drive.

one more thing, what will a defragmentation of the disk do?
    it cant hurt can it?

defragmenting organizes the files of your drive in a logical sequence and also brings them back together. Over time files get fragmented all over your drive causing your drive to work harder and longer when reading your files. This can slow down your system considerably.
