HDD makes extensive noise and runs all the time

    I am really getting worried. It sounds like the HDD is going down VERY soon.

    I think your fears say it all.. if in doubt that it's going to work, I'd power it down until you can back it up, or take it to a professional repair facility. When you're i nthat situatoin the longer you run it, the worse you'll be in the long run...

    repairing a HDD will cost you more than buying a new one. Having to pay for professional data retreival will cost you your right arm and at least one kidney.

    With that said, you need to do a couple of things to test the drive out before thinking it is dying. Check here for diagnostic utilities http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7602

    You might also want to try defragmenting the drive, sometimes heavily fragmented drives can make strange noises that mimic a dying drive. Also, if the cables are not well seated, it can cause this as well.
