Help a newbie!!!

Hello guys,

I hope you can help me with a problem. I have been trying to link my desktop PC to my Laptop PC with a RJ45 crossover cable. Somewhere down the line I have screwed up, as my desktop now goes into "Not Responding" mode at every opportunity. I removed the Preventon firewall which helped a lot, it is now occasionally freezing. My first question is, can I somehow trace what is causing my PC to not respond? I am assuming that there is a software conflict somewhere down the line.

The second question (after I,ve sorted my desktop) is as follows :

I have :
1) 1 x desktop PC - XP Pro
2) 1 x Laptop - XP home
3) 1 x RJ45 Crossover cable

I want to be able to swap/transfer files between PC's. Can anybody point me in the direction of a step by step process to set up my PC's to talk to each other.

Any help is appreciated,

Craig. :D

The ideal case:

1. Install NICs and drivers.
2. Connect the crossover cable.
3. Check connectivity LEDs on network cards (green steady light)
4. Configure TCP/IP and Windows Networking on both computers. (should work by default..)
5. Make sure both computers belong to the same workgroup.

If you want troubleshooting steps, post back

Nodsu,

Thanks for your reply. I had already done 95% of what you posted so I am on the right track. When my desktop is working properly I will recheck TCP/IP settings again.

Thanks again.

Craig.:D
