Help! My computer keeps freezing!

My computer keeps freezing when I try to run most programs (virus scanners, dvd players, music players, etc.) I can only use messenger and the internet. Everything else freezes, and I can't even do a CTL Alt Delete.

I use Windows XP, 1.60 GHz, 768MB of RAM...
Anything else you need to know?
I could really use some help, I am going out of my mind trying to figure out what to do.

If this has just started happening or been getting worse for a while can you go to this thread and follow the instructions given there

If it's been happening ever since you installed xp it ight be a different problem.
