i just reinstall windows xp and when i tried to install realtek ac'97 driver, the computer just shuts itself down and restart. when it opens again it says the computer just recovered from a serious error

here's my spec
asus p4vp pentium 4 2.0ghz
ram 1 gb
i dun think i hav any sound card

pleeeeaase help. i cant live w/o music !~!
thx alot

go to the device manager
rht-click My Computer ->Properties->Hardware->device mgr
click the + on Sound, video, & games to expand the devices
are there any RED or Yellow marks? if so, where?
dbl-click on it to get the properties of the device
and investigate the driver

I would uninstall the sound from device manager, update hardware changes, and allow Windows [searching Windows updates] to install the sound driver.
Realtek is a common driver.

OK There's a yellow exclamation mark on "multimedia audio controller"
when i see its property it says theres no driver installed
so when i tried to install realtek ac 97 driver by letting windows search for itself, the computer just shuts down and restarted itself when the installation was about to finish. When it comes up again, a dialog box comes up saying windows has recovered from a serious error

In Device Manager where u can see the yellow exclamation mark, right-click on the device and choose 'Uninstall'.
Reboot
Windows will detect the hardware upon reboot and ask for drivers.
Cancel the prompt.
Now use the installation file for the audio drivers that u might have.
After that, reboot.

Try it, it just might work...

small world -- last night I was helping a friend with this same issue.
I used this process but it lead nowhere -- no errors, but still no driver either :(

I've downloaded a large archive for Sound Blaster Live and loaded it to my
thumbdrive for install at a later time.

i also tried that klaw24 but once i installed the driver, the computer just shuts down and restarted itself and thats the problem
