Help with installing new dvd writer

I have recently installed a new dvd writer and set it as slave drive,and my cdr as master dont know if this is right.My prob is that when i insert a disc into my
dvd writer i cant access the drive unless i go into the the drive properties and enable cd recording on the drive but then the drive tells me i have a cdr disc instead of a dvd disc.
im currently running win xp.

Try setting the dvd writer to master and the cdr to slave, see if that helps any.

if i do that do i have to change anything the bios settings

No, not really, unless you specifically want to boot from a certain drive first.

Just connect the dvd to the end of the ide cable and the cdr to the connector that is part way down the cable. Provided the jumpers are set correctly, it should work.

Some dvd`s don`t seem to do so well when set as slave. Why that should be I don`t know, but I have seen similar problems myself.
