early hangouts

It looks like the first images of Google’s Hangouts makeover have now surfaced. Many have been waiting for the refreshed design after rumors started leaking of the overhaul. The images seen in the post clearly show Google’s continued move to Material Design, with a completely new coat of paint throughout the app.

While Google has implemented some Material aesthetics to Hangouts previously, it has now spread app-wide, with fancy sliding drawers, drop shadows and icon/button redesigns.

There also appears to be some functionality updates we can pull from the images as well. We will now be able to change our status from the app, something we have always been able to do from the desktop version of Hangouts, but it has been feature sorely missed from the app. Along with status changing, we look to be getting time stamps, rounded message bubbles, new menu structures in chat windows and more.

Beyond that, it looks like the same Hangouts we are used to, just with a much better look. However, it is possible Google has more in-store for this update than what we can see today, as some have suggested.

There is no confirmed date as to when Hangouts 4.0 might roll out and it sounds as though there could be some changes before then anyhow.
