I've been having trouble trying to run Windows Update. It keeps freezing. I use Firefox, so I tried with IE ( I believe it is v7, whatever the latest version is). I've cleaned out cookies and browser history, I still get the same hang-up. I followed all the steps from the sticky thread. I didn't attach or saved the AVG anti-Spyware log since it did not find anything. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks.

*edit*
The AVG rootkit scan also did not find anything.

Your HJT log is clean.

The only thing I`ve spotted that`s wrong, is there`s still a couple of bits of Symantec/Norton running, even though you`re using McAfee.

Boot into safe mode, under your normal user name(NOT THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT). See how HERE.

In Windows Explorer, turn on "Show all files and folders, including hidden and system". See how HERE.

Click start/run and type services.msc into the run box and press the enter key.

When the window appears, maximise it. Double click on the following services(if there) and select stop if they are running. Set the startup type to disabled. Click apply/ok for each service you disable.

Symantec Core LC
LiveUpdate
Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler

Close the services window.

Open your task manager, by holding down the ctrl and alt keys and pressing the delete key.

Click on the processes tab and end process for(if there).

ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
symlcsvc.exe
LUCOMS~1.EXE

Close task manager.

Run HJT with no other programmes open(except notepad). Click the scan button. Have HJT fix the following, by placing a tick in the little box next to(if there).

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.msn.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.passport.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.passport.net

Fix all 018 Protocol: entries.

O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe

O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT.

Locate and delete the following bold files and/or directories(if there).

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared<Delete the entire folder.
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec<Delete the entire folder.

Reboot into normal mode and rehide your protected OS files.

Post a fresh HJT log and let me know if you`re still having problems.

Regards Howard :)

First I wasnt to say thank you Howard, ok I followed your instructions but was not able to find the following:

processes

ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
symlcsvc.exe
LUCOMS~1.EXE

HJTlog

O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe

O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

I was able to run Windows Update, it still was pretty slow and was not able to run anything else or do anything without IE freezing. Attached is the new HJT log.

*edit*
I use to have an IE tab add-on for Firefox, not sure if that might be part of the problem so I have disabled the add-on and deleted it.

Your HJT log is clean.

Download, install and run the Cleaner programme as per step9 of the instructions in this thread HERE.

Is the rest of your internet browsing/downloading ok?

Regards Howard :)

Everything else I browse or download is fine, except for Blockbuster Online but I was told, by their employees that "to best view their site one needs to view it with IE".

I`m not sure what`s causing your slow Windows updates. I guess it could be the Microsoft website that`s having problems.

If the situation doesn`t improve, maybe open a new thread in our Windows OS forum.

If you have any further virus/spyware problems, please post in this thread.
