  1. ...without disabling my Internet conncection? Zone Alarm tells me that svchost.exe is connecting to the net and is acting as a server. I don't want it to, but when I disable it in the Services menu, my Internet connection fails to work. What gives?

Right click on My Computer, select Properties. In the Automatic Updates tab set it to Off.
In the services utility you can then set Automatic Updates to Manual.

svchost.exe is used for generic services or those without a seperate process, no point disabling it acting as a server.
