  1. I have a few avi and mpg files that I really enjoy the music played over the movie. Is it possible to lift just the music off/out of the file?? Any good programs or something in windows (doubtful but thought I'd ask). I have never edited any movie files so know nothing of them and how they work. TIA

Well you have come to the right place I am a NLE non-linear editing professional.

Go download sonic foundry's Vegas Video or adobe premire.

With Vegas it is so simple to do this you won't believe it.

How to just get the audio.

Open up the file and drag it onto the timeline.
Then mute or click on disable video and you will just have the sound while the video is greyed out.
Then render the file as mp3, wmv or whatever your favorite file format is.
