How does S/PDIF out work?

Well, I got my TV-Out to work, and I can watch movies/anime and such on my TV fine(love it), but I'm stuck using my computer speakers as I cannot figure out how to work the S/PDIF, as it only causes other speakers to humm slightly when there's supposed to be a sound.

Using integrated sound with my ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe.

Anyone good with this stuff? Would buying a sound card help?
